Stranger Danger!

Edison has been watching too many After-School Specials.  He thinks anyone else on the street is there to abduct him and he has to scare them off.  He does so by barking "Stranger!" very loudly for all to hear.

We've been trying to explain to him that he is fine as long as he's with us.

Luckily, he seems to be understanding as his stranger bubble has gotten a bit bigger - now it isn't every person/dog/bicycle in a 2 block radius.

Is your dog aware of strangers?

  1. There was a time that Lainey was very reactive to strangers. This made walking or being out in public very difficult, because putting her (and my) safety first is always my priority. After all, if Mama isn't going to protect you than who is?
She began lunging at people and it was too much for me, considering she is much stronger than I am. I chose to stop our walks (which was great timing as she ended up having 5 ACL surgeries and could hardly walk anyway).
Once I started walking her again, we kept to either early mornings or late evenings when our neighborhood was quiet. I also had to begin walking her outside of our neighborhood because she began to claim our subdivision as HERS, and all other people/dogs were on HER territory and she needed to protect it.
A year+ later and we are able to walk during peak hours and she doesn't even bat an eye at other people/dogs. Unless, they start talking to her Mama and then Lainey loses her freaking mind. We are currently working on letting her know that not all people who speak to mommy out in public are out to hurt her and there is no need to protect her unless you are asked.
The only advice I can give is "Be Patient". Training and success don't happen overnight. Best of luck to you and Edi

    1. Glad to know we're not the only ones! Edi really has made HUGE progress, but as always it's a work-in-progress (as every thing should be!).

  2. Oh Boomer and Dottie are aware but they want more than anything to make friends and start screaming at the person and scare them away... opposite problem I guess!

  3. Kaya barks once when someone comes to the front door. I don't know why she bothers because she she smothers them in kisses when I open the door.
