Family Walk Friday: Connie's Ice Cream

Yikes.  Things have been crazy around here and we haven't been very good about making time for posts lately.  Sorry about that.  Another thing that we haven't had much time for is our family walks.

We like to take time (especially with this gorgeous weather we've been having!) to take long walks together exploring new (to us) parts of our city.

A perfect way to cap off a great walk is with some delicious ice cream of course.  We've been so excited to get some Connie's Ice Cream since they opened this summer.  Cue the angels because this stuff is heavenly -- homemade, mouth-watering varieties.  If you're in the Erie area and haven't tried Connie's...go.  NOW!

Do you take family walks?  And cap them off with ice cream?

PEDs: When Walks Don't Work Out

So far, our walking group has been fortunate to have found beautiful, less-traveled routes for all our walks.  Even when we've met an off-leash dog or two, we've had relative success.  Until this week.  We found a beautiful little neighborhood with light traffic and a good view.  When we tested the area before selecting it and also when we walked it two weeks ago, it seemed to be a great route.  This week, however, all the dogs were out.

Granted, their owners were right there, but that didn't stop them from walking right up to our group.  With a few "yellow dogs" in the group, this is not only stressful for our walkers, but does not set our dogs up for success.  Unfortunately, we've found the first walk route that just hasn't worked out!

Have any of your seemingly beautiful walks ever turned into an obstacle course?

How Fetching!

A couple weeks ago, Edison found a tennis ball somewhere in the house.  He has spent the past two weeks running around the house with it in his mouth.

Every time I let him out of his crate, he runs right for his ball.

With the nice weather we've been having and the large amount of time we've been spending outside, we've been working on the age-old game of fetch.

Neither of our pooches are big fetchers (especially Tesla, who isn't much of a toy dog unless she's stealing it from Edi), so it's not really a past-time of ours.

But we've really gotten into the swing of it this week.  Edison has been loving the extra exercise, and we love the interaction we get with him, plus the chance to work on his obedience.  He's actually getting pretty good at returning it (after a full lap around the yard of course), and we've come to love the mindless repetition of tossing the ball.

Does your dog fetch?

PEDs: One Whole Year

When we started our dog walking group, we weren't sure if anyone would actually show up.  So we were surprised when we had 15 dogs at our first walk!

Over the past year, we've had a consistent group of faithful walkers.  We even made it through our first winter -- which was no small feat with the polar vortex we experienced.

We walked through rain, snow, and sunshine.  We learned more about our dogs and each other.  We created an amazing community.

Thanks to everyone who made the last year a success.  Here's to many more to come!!

Stress-Free Blogging

When I first started this blog, I was very sporatic about my posts.  I wanted to post everyday, but it just wasn't happening.  I would get frustrated with myself if I didn't make my posts.

Mid-April of last year I decided that trying to post everyday wasn't working for me.  It was stressing me out to post and frustrated me when I didn't - really just making things unsustainable.  So I picked a plan that would work: Monday-Wednesday-Friday.  This gives me two days to create a post, plus the weekend to stockpile if I have a particularly busy week.

We've been pretty busy in our house lately, and while we don't want to neglect our blog, sometimes it's just not in the cards to blog.  And I've decided that's okay.  I'll give myself a pass.  Instead of letting it stress me, I let it go.  And it really keeps this little blog we've got fun.

Do you find it hard to blog some days?  Do you have a schedule?

Ed & Tess's Favorite Things: Trupanion Pet Insurance

We wrote about one of our safety precautions last week, but we also have another up our sleeves.

I was in college when I brought Tess home, so I didn't have a lot of disposable income.  I knew that if something major happened, whether it be a sickness or an accident, I may or may not have enough money to pay for any medical care or treatment.

I knew I could never forgive myself if I let something happen to her because I didn't have the cash, so I looked into pet insurance.  After doing some research and reading reviews, I decided to go with Trupanion pet insurance.  We can adjust our premium to any deductible that fits our budget.

We've been lucky that we haven't had to file a claim yet, but feel so much better knowing we have a safety net if we ever have to.

Do your pooches have health insurance?  What kind?  Have you had to use it?

PEDs: Importance of Breaks

During our weekly pack walks, we always ensure to take a break or two.  While this is especially important during the hot summer months to ensure the pooches don't overheat, we also take at least one break during the cooler walks as well.

We've found that a lot of good stuff happens during the breaks - advise is shared, stories are told, and connections are made.  The pooches also are challenged to relax around one another, which isn't always as easy task.

Erie folks, don't forget to join us this Wednesday, May 7th at 6:30pm.  We'll be meeting at the Tap House (333 State Street) for our 1 Year Anniversary Get Together (humans only)!!
